What is IELTS?

IELTS is the “International English Language Testing System” that is designed to assess your knowledge of English language and place you in the International English Language Tests and Marking Systems chart which clearly state your rank in English level from starter to proficiency.

Look at the chart clearly and understand according to your desired IELTS band score what should be the level of your English language agreeing to the International English Language Test and Marking Systems Chart. For example if you require IELTS band score 7.0 then you need to have a lower level of advanced user’s knowledge.


IELTS test mainly check you English knowledge and proficiency in IELTS skills. So during the initial assessments you need to understand whether you need to improve your English knowledge or IELTS skills or both.

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

What is IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training?

There are two modules of IELTS:

  • IELTS Academic:  if you are planning to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, or if you are pursuing professional registration,
    (e.g. doctors and nurses) you are compulsory to do IELTS Academic.
  • IELTS General Training: if you are planning to migrate to an English-speaking country,
    (e.g. Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK) or if you required to get a training or studying at below degree level you are requisite to do IELTS General Training.

What is the Test Format of IELTS?

IELTS Listening and Speaking exams are same for both Academic and General Training. However Reading and Writing modules are different and according to the purpose of the test the content differs.

Not to forget that IELTS Academic Test is checking if you have a sufficient English knowledge to continue your studies (Degree / Post Graduate) in English medium. Though IELTS General Training Test is to confirm that you have an adequate English knowledge to survive in a society which uses English as their medium of communication.

General information on IELTS Examination

  • IELTS certificate is valid for two years.
  • You can do the IELTS exam at British Council or IDP. There is no difference in these test centres. The test paper, questions, duration to answer, marking criteria, standards of the assessors / examiners and other criteria are the same.
  • IELTS test accept both British English and American English: There are two main differences in this two types of English. They are the difference in vocabulary and spellings.

  • Listening, Reading and Writing skills are tested on the same day and Speaking skills can be tested either before or after testing those three skills. Also please be aware that there is no break between testing of those three skills.
  • You are instructed to use pencil for answering your IELTS, hence make sure to take extra pencils, a sharpener and an eraser.
  • You are not permitted to wear a watch in your IELTS test, even during your Speaking test. There will be a clock / count-down time on the wall and you should manage your with with the help of that.
  • Generally your test results will arrive within 13 days.
  • You can take IELTS test as many times as you wish. You can use the results which you have scored the highest even though you have done IELTS exam after that examination. If you wish you can request to re-check (re-correction) your answers by making the necessary payments and submitting the request.
