- According to the IELTS module that you are facing, the structure of IELTS Writing
component varies.
- IELTS Academic Writing:
- • Task I – is to write a report on a chart, graph, table, map or a process chart etc.
- • Task II – is to write an essay on a given topic.
- IELTS General Training Writing:
- • Task I – is to write a letter on a specified scenario
- • Task II – is to write an essay on a supplied topic.
- You will be allowed to consume 60 minutes to complete both writing tasks. It is
recommended to consume 20 minutes for task I and 40 minutes for task II.
- The marking of these tasks will be done according to the following criteria.
- • Task Achievement – Is the writing related to the task? (25% of the final score).
- • Coherence and Cohesion – Are the words and sentences related to each other
(ideas are interconnected)? Are the paragraphs separated, according to a logic?
Are the sentences in a sequence? Is the topic sentence followed by supporting
sentences? (25% of the final score).
- • Lexical Resource – Does the candidate has a range of vocabulary? (25% of the
final score).
- • Grammatical Range and Accuracy – Is the grammar correct? (25% of the final
score).
- Writing task I contributes 1/3 of your final writing marks.
- Writing task II contributes 2/3 of your final writing marks.
- Make sure to spend an enough time to do the planning of both tasks. A common
mistakes done by most of the candidates is spending very little or no time on planning
process. It is recommended to use around 8 minutes planning time for task I and about
12 minutes planning time for task II. When you have made a proper planning it will be
very easy to write the task I and II. Also it is important for you to understand how to
make a proper planning that helps you to complete the tasks effectively.
- There are specialized vocabulary that you need to use for both tasks. Make sure that
you will not repeat the same word more than twice. Our recommendation is to use a
word only once and use synonyms if required.
- Analyzing the topics with Keywords, Micro-keywords and actions words help you to
understand the task achievement that you need to fulfill.
- Also make sure to demonstrate your knowledge on the following areas as they includes
in the marking criteria.
- • Sentence formation: simple, compound, complex and compound/ complex.
- • Punctuation marks.
- • Verbs and tenses.
- • Collocations and compound words.
- • Paraphrasing techniques.
- • Spelling rules and techniques as poor spelling will affect your band score.
Academic Writing Task I
- As specified above IELTS Writing Task I is making a report on a provided chart, graph,
table data, pictorial, flow chart, process diagram, map etc.
- You need to make the report containing approximately 150 words. It can go up to 165-
170 but not more than that. See the Word Counting Help section.
- The suggested structure for the academic task I is:
- Techniques to improve your Reading SPEED:
• Introduction
• Basic / General trend
• Detail description.
• Conclusion (This is optional, but we recommend you to include this as it shows
your understanding on the supplied chart / diagram)

- It is important for you to practice different kinds of task I related questions and get them
corrected by an IELTS experienced assessor.
Academic Writing Task I
- General Training writing task I is a letter which you are required to write a informal, semi-
formal or a formal letter.
- The types of letters that you get for IELTS is:
• Apology letter
• Complaint letter
• Letter to a friend.
• Invitation letter
• Making arrangements
• Resignations / applications
- You will be given instructions and three points to include in your letter. You need to
make sure that all the points are covered in your letter.
- Your letter is to contain approximately 150 words. It can go up to 165-170 but not more

- You can spend up to 20 minutes for this task. Make sure that you will cover all three
writing stages; planning, writing and checking and correcting.
- Take about 6 minutes for planning, 10 minutes for writing and 4 minutes for checking
and correcting.
- You do not need to write the address of the letter.
- Pay close attention to whom you are writing the letter and your relationship with that
person. This helps you to decide the tone and writing style.
- Pay attention to the aim you write the letter and the purpose.
- Make sure to structure your according to the tree points that they give you to address.
- All points must be included in your letter; if not your band score will be affected.
Writing Task II – Essay Writing
- It is recommended you to spend about 40 minutes for this essay writing task.
- You are required to write about 250 words and we recommend you not to exceed 275

- Spend about 12 minutes for planning, 22 minutes for writing and 6 minutes for checking
and correcting.
- The marking of this tasks will be done according to the following criteria.
• Task Response – Is the writing related to the task? (25% of the final score)
